Helen Smith (82) was the first woman to enlist in the Army Corp in Syracuse, NY. About WWII started. With mother, Sammie Elizabeth Page (late 80s) in a nursing Home in Cortland (first nursing home in Cortland)" Only nursing home near Cortland. " Her husband Howard Smith. Both spent the last days in Syracuse. Smith lived at 818 E. Fayette St. then moved to Berwyn Street. One of the first black families on the South Side. Moved because 81 was constructed.
